چکیده
We theoretically compare the tolerance to chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion of various modulation formats, electronic processing techniques, and optical equalizers. The comparison is given in terms of a target system outage probability.

Polarization Losses in Optical Fibers
Very long span optical communications are mainly limited by the chromatic dispersion (CD) or group velocity dispersion (GVD), fiber nonlinearities, and optical amplifier noise (Agrawal 2005). Different frequencies of a pulse travel with their own velocities, which involves a pulse spreading. In a fiber-optic communication system, information is transmitted within a fiber by using a coded sequen...
متن کاملPMD tolerance of 288 Gbit/s Coherent WDM and transmission over unrepeatered 124 km of field-installed single mode optical fiber.
Low-cost, high-capacity optical transmission systems are required for metropolitan area networks. Direct-detected multi-carrier systems are attractive candidates, but polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the major impairments that limits their performance. In this paper, we report the first experimental analysis of the PMD tolerance of a 288Gbit/s NRZ-OOK Coherent Wavelength Division Mu...
متن کاملCompensation of Polarization Mode Dispersion
The topic of thesis is “Compensation of Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD)” in Fiber optics communication and its impact on high speed data transmission. The work can be divided into three parts which deals with major aspects of PMD: characteristics, transmission and compensation. Polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), in single-mode optical fibers, is a phenomenon that a limit the bit-rate-distan...
متن کاملPMD compensation in fiber-optic communication systems with direct detection using LDPC-coded OFDM.
The possibility of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation in fiber-optic communication systems with direct detection using a simple channel estimation technique and low-density parity-check (LDPC)-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is demonstrated. It is shown that even for differential group delay (DGD) of 4/BW (BW is the OFDM signal bandwidth), the degradation du...
متن کاملBilateral Comparison on Polarization Mode Dispersion between KRISS and NIST
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the major parameters used to characterize optical fiber and fiber optic components. It has to be accurately measured and controlled or mitigated to ensure optical signal transmission with modulation rates of more than 10 Gbps for conventional single mode fiber [1]. Demand for PMD references has been gradually increasing as the instruments of PMD meas...
